CFO Insights: The Transition from CFO to CEO

a businessman in suit

Record numbers of CFOs are being promoted to CEO as the finance function's influence grows. In 2023, finance chiefs were three times more likely to move to a CEO role than in 2021. This trend is driven by rising economic and geopolitical challenges that enhance CFO visibility and leadership skills. Ambition among CFOs is growing, with 60% expressing a desire to become CEOs, partly due to their expanding roles in strategy and sustainability. However, they still face challenges securing these positions, as COO and president roles dominate CEO transitions in major companies. Key obstacles include limited networking, market knowledge, and operational expertise. To succeed, CFOs must carefully plan and determine their desire for the role.

In this CFO Insights series, we spoke with three CEOs who were formerly CFOs to gain insights into their experiences and advice for finance leaders considering this career path. Download the content to learn more.
