“Dream big, start small” and grow

Here at Concur, we have a warm spot in our hearts for National Small Business Week. For over 50 years, The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has taken the opportunity to highlight the impact of outstanding entrepreneurs, small business owners, and others from across the nation through its National Small Business Week celebration.  This year, it’s May 1-7. We think it’s a great idea to recognize small businesses. That’s how we started, and serving small business is a key part of our company culture. We’ve been where you are, and we want to grow with you.

Small business, big deal

Small businesses really are a big deal. You might be surprised at the numbers – SBA says small businesses make up:

  • 99.7% of U.S. firms that employ workers
  • 49.2% of private sector employment
  • 42.9% of private sector payroll

Next time someone asks about your business at a party, drop those figures on them. Anything with that size footprint is a very big deal.

My story, maybe your story?

This year’s theme is “Dream Big, Start Small”. That’s certainly the way my life has gone. I grew up on a farm in the Cameron, Missouri area, and my earliest business experiences were helping out with several small businesses that my mom started.  She was a creative person, and so I would see her take a very, very small idea and turn it into a fully functioning business. And so when I was young I was always seeing how even the smallest idea could turn into a profitable business.

The Concur story

Here at Concur, our story is a lot like that – we perceived a need, started small with a big idea, and grew. Our founders were buried – literally – in the paperwork surrounding the sale of another company. The buyer told them: “If you can’t get all of your expense reports and receipts done by tomorrow, you won’t get paid.” Thirty-six consecutive hours later, they had their paperwork in order, and they had their big idea.

Now, as a company, we look at the way work should work and eliminate unnecessary tasks (like spreadsheet expense reports and piles of paper receipts and invoices) that get in the way of getting things done. We passionately believe that it’s all about simple and seamless, and that’s especially helpful for businesses where people have tons on their plate and are wearing two or three (or more) hats. Sound familiar?

Compete with the big guys

The good news is that we are in a time right now when you can automate business processes online – in the cloud. Done right, that can help level the field between small businesses and giant enterprises, because you no longer have to build an expensive infrastructure all your own to get those advantages. With cloud solutions you can start small and grow. So if you’re a small business user, and you have ten people in your company, you only need to activate the pieces of the solution that make sense for you then. But as your needs change, you can continue to turn on or activate other pieces of the solution.

We’ll never stop growing with you

And that’s what we want. We know the story of dreaming big, starting small and growing because we’ve lived it, and we want to help other businesses do the same. Small Business Week is a perfect time to think about that.
