A Friendship That Probably Won’t Last

Average: 2.9 (7 votes)

I was trying to do some work on a flight, and the 11-year-old boy next to me kept talking to me. “What’s your name?” he asked. “What’s your favorite TV show?” He was full of questions. I tried to work, but I ended up chatting with the kid for most of the trip. Towards the end of the flight, he turned to his mom and said, “Mom, take a picture of me and Tom.” She obliged. It makes me laugh now to think abut what ever became of that picture. Pasted into his scrapbook? Or, more likely, discreetly thrown away by his mom.

Rethink that moment. We had a delay after boarding and the Pilot come out to make his announcement. He spotted our 10 year old and began chatting with him, took him into the navigators area-printed the waether map, real wings the whole nine yards. Turns out they had the same first name, so when we recieved clearance, the Pilot announced that he was sorry the delay took so long, but this other "Patrick" was now old enough to fly us out... Lots of laughs, and pictures. Funny thing, 5 years later when "Patrick" was flying to his grandparents, same scenario.... and SAME PILOT. Our son looked up and asked him if this happened on all of his flights or only while they were both on the same plane.... and the pilot remembered our son..... Plus, your positive moments with that child, how ever miniscule, could of had a VERY positive effect. You never know....

That was sweet of you to talk to the kid.
